10 Proven Ways to Sign More PMU and SMP Clients Without Spending a Penny (Free Guide Inside)

One of the most in-demand topics in my training course and community is this:
How do I generate leads without spending money?

The answer is simple and powerful:
You trade time instead of money.

When it comes to growing your PMU or SMP business, you have two options:
✅ Invest money
✅ Invest time
✅ Or both

This free guide breaks down 10 proven methods for signing clients without paid ads, influencers, or gimmicks. These are real strategies I’ve used in my business and have taught to my clients. Now I’m giving them to you.

1. Encourage Word-of-Mouth Referrals

Happy clients are your secret weapon. Word-of-mouth is powerful, free, and often overlooked.

How to Get More Referrals:

  • Ask clients for reviews on Google, Facebook, or your site

  • Create “shareable moments” like selfies or results videos they can post and tag you in

  • Offer small referral rewards (for example, £20 per referral or discounted services)

Pro tip: Hand out business cards with a referral incentive printed on them.

2. Leverage Local Community Groups

There are dozens of people in your area looking for your service. You just haven’t met them yet.

Where to Start:

  • Join Facebook Groups for your town or niche (for example, “London Wellness Community”)

  • Share tips and advice, not just promos

  • Attend local networking events and meet other business owners face-to-face

I did this myself when I first started and I still get work from the connections I made early on.

3. Partner with Complementary Businesses

Make friends with other local businesses that serve your ideal clients. Think:
💈 Barbershops
💆‍♀️ Beauty salons
🏥 Hair-loss clinics
🏋️ Gyms

Drop off flyers, offer referral commissions, and focus on building relationships. Not just transactions.

4. Tap Into Your Personal Network

Your friends, family, and acquaintances already know and trust you. Don’t hide your business from them. Use it to your advantage.

This is especially useful if you're starting out and need to build your portfolio.

How I started: I built websites for my mum’s Pilates instructor and a PMU artist for free. That experience led to paying clients later.

5. Organic Social Media

Posting consistently on Instagram, Facebook, and especially TikTok is a must. But you need to be smart about it.

Facebook and Instagram have limited reach unless you pay. TikTok is different. Its algorithm still favors organic growth.

Quick tip: Repurpose your Instagram Reels as TikToks to double your reach with no extra effort.

6. Google SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

A website without SEO is like a shop in the desert. If you’re not on Page 1 of Google, clients won’t find you.

Start with:

  • On-page SEO (keywords, meta titles, descriptions)

  • Google Business Profile

  • Location-based keywords (for example, “SMP in Manchester”)

Important: If you're paying someone for SEO, ask for a monthly report. No report usually means no work is being done.

✅ All my custom websites include SEO for free because visibility matters.

7. Follow Up with Old Leads

If you've been in business for a while, go back through your DMs, emails, and old enquiries.

Send a personalised:

  • Voice note

  • Video

  • Message

You’d be surprised how many people are still interested. They just need a nudge.

🔥 Clients using my system can re-engage old leads instantly using “Database Reactivation,” powered by AI.

8. Comment on Local Social Media Posts

Drop supportive comments on posts from:

  • Local gyms

  • Restaurants

  • Events

  • Community pages

This subtly boosts your visibility. People are curious. A few clicks on your profile can turn into real leads.

9. Snipe Competitor Followers (Ethically)

It might sound cheeky but it's fair game. And it works.

How it works:

  • Find PMU or SMP accounts similar to yours

  • Follow 5 to 10 of their followers each day

  • Engage with their content

Never buy followers. That destroys your reach and misleads the algorithm. Just focus on real people who care about what you do.

10. Connect with Other Artists

The PMU and SMP industry thrives on community. Build relationships with other artists not just for support, but also for referrals.

For example:
If you're in Leeds and an artist in London gets an enquiry from someone up north, they might refer the client to you.

Help others and they’ll help you.
